Google Talk Gadget

Today, we're releasing the Google Talk Gadget - a embeddable component that provides a rich IM experience anywhere on the web! It's Flash-based, so it's nice and snappy, requires no download, and works anywhere Flash 8 is supported, including Mac OS X and Linux. It's got the same look and feel as the downloadable Google Talk client, along with some cool new features, including integration with YouTube and Picasa - if you add a video as your status message, your friends can watch the video directly from Google Talk!

See it in action, or check it out in this YouTube video. If you're using the Google Personalized homepage, you can add the gadget to your page. Or, if you'd like to add it to your own page, learn how here.

More coverage on the Google Talk Blog and Official Google Blog.

Although I don't really like to chat in a browser (I prefer GTalk), but nonetheless, I have added the gadget to my sidebar, which enables me to chat whenever I want.

The gadget is designed so precious that I wouldn't think of it as based on Flash before I right click on it. (I thought it was powered by the cheesy AJAX, as so many of my friends)

There are still a lot of work to make it nearly-perfect. (nothing is perfect, I believe)

Say, I don't really understand the point of adding this gadget on a web page which the visitors couldn't communicate with me directly on the page, instead, they can only chat with their friends. If one day that visitors can communicate with the site-owner using the gadget, it would be great. (under the circumstance that the email would not be revealed, and the gadget would only be activate by the owner in the Google Account page, and to limit the URL to use it)

Enjoy your day. :)

This looks really slick. Tab's are great, and so is the media integration...I am guessing similar features are pending on the PC client which would be good.

As Justin states, the main value I will get from this is being able to use this nice interface cross-platform. Another reason some people might use it could be due to firewall restrictions, Internet cafes etc. Justin, as an aside, you discussed GTalk SSL/TLS security in January, does this flash client also encrypt?

The show stopper I have encountered is that it does not work with Google App's Domains Gtalk accounts...only gmail.com domains...so I can't mess around much with it yet.

i really love the new gtalk gadget- there are just two issues with it: why can't i resize the gadget? i only have 3 contacts on my gtalk list, so it wastes a lot of space. it could at least automatically resize, so it fits the list when there are not so many contacts on it.
the other thing is: why aren't my jabber contact's avatars shown? i can see them in the desktop client, but google chat and the google talk gadget don't show them...
