Right now you can only connect to the AIM/ICQ network using this gateway, there is no XMPP Federation. This means that you cannot talk to users on any other IM network at this time, including Google Talk. Hopefully AOL will add support for XMPP Federation in the near future.
Still, this is a welcome development. While at AOL, I worked on the initial design for this project, and it's good to see it live. Note that the gateway is still not officially launched, so it may be unavailable from time to time.

Pending buddy must have unknown state caused heated discussion in the office in the past few days. All a sudden I ask myself why AIM network has to be so truthfully about your buddy's actual state. Who is really offline nowdays? We have cell phones, server delievers offline messages. Can't we have a little fun now and then by randomly assigning a state to your buddy and make it a guessing game.
IM infrastructure should migrate from instant messaging oriented to entertainment oriented.
Has this gone away ? I've been trying to connect to xmpp.oscar.aol.com:5222 on and off for the last three days without any joy.
I also think that this has gone away. That didn't last very long. :S
Was XMPP federation part of that "project" or are you just guessing it?
I do really doubt it because if it will be that way Google wouldn't have implemented AIM integration by the means of a transport.
